For Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli, it was nothing but a harrowing Thursday as he did not perform as per his potential and was subjected to severe trolling on social media. That is a usual trend but it was Sunil Gavaskar's remark during the match that put off Twitter.
So exactly what did Sunil Gavaskar say about Anushka Sharma during KXIP vs RCB IPL 2020 match?
As Virat's game spiraled downwards, Gavaskar said, 'Sirf Anushka ki bowling ki practice ki hai unhone,' with reference to Virat's wife, actress Anushka Sharma. Instead of 'bowling', Twitter misinterpreted the word as 'gendon' and soon enough, Gavaskar was censured left, right and centre on social media.
'Heard this live and the guy laughed. He has always been in the news for making some really unacceptable remarks 'jokingly' while in the commentary box but this isn't okay. Who gave him the right to drag somebody's family into it irrespective of the context he meant it in?' a user said.
Another comment reads, 'More power to Anushka Sharma for tolerating these sexist human beings.'
It was actually after a Twitter user posted this that Gavaskar's comment sent the internet into an overdrive.
Gavaskar sahab saying : 'Inhone lockdown me to bas Anushka ki gendon ki practice ki hai'
— Mateo Madridista (@Don_Mateo13) September 24, 2020Twitter isn't willing to understand though that this is not what Gavaskar said.
Disgusting comments made by #SunilGavaskar on #AnushkaSharma and #ViratKohli
If he plays badly, stick to harmless trolling about just the Game. It's never funny to drag Anushka into any sort of trolling. I feel for her
Calling all REAL feminists to stand up for her.
— Aish (@Aish25443366) September 25, 2020Not expected such comments from #SunilGavaskar. Onus is on #BCCI that commentators who criticize players family should be sacked from the commentary box permanently. Commentators are not supposed to talk about players' personal life. Anything can happen in the game.#BycottSunil
— Gauraav Sainii (@GauraavSainii) September 25, 2020Veteran players who are now serving as commentators are taking too much liberty to comment on players . Then Nasser Hussain and now Gavaskar .Action must be taken on Gavaskar to give message to rest of critics as well#SunilGavaskar#AnushkaSharma
— Vinnesha vinnu (@vinnesha) September 25, 2020#SunilGavaskar even if your intentions were right hope you do realize that it was poor, unnecessary, & distasteful conduct by u & has hurt people for all the right reasons. — Finderskeepah (@finderskeepah) September 25, 2020to you. You loose your respect. Understand that!#SunilGavaskar
— Khushiii (@Kii__shhh) September 25, 2020Not only #SunilGavaskar but also many others blame & say bad about #AnushkaSharma whenever #Kohli makes mistake. This is not done & this must be stopped now.#SunilGavaskar sir should apologize or #Kohli & #BCCI should take actions.#RCBvKXIP#IPL2020
— Lob Mukherjee (@lob_mukherjee) September 25, 2020Some users, however, managed to understand the real story and spoke in favour of Gavaskar on Twitter.

— Arzi (@singhr07) September 25, 2020Gavaskar is getting a lot of flak for his comment on Anushka Sharma. We don't know his intent, but it also shows how the Tweeple are perceiving it. He might have meant Ansuhka was the only one to bowl to Virat during the lockdown.#SunilGavaskar#IPL2020

'That Mr Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her for her husbands game ? Sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commentating on the game. Don't you think you should have equal amount of respect for me and us? I'm sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to use to comment on my husbands performance from lest night or we your words only relevant If you use my name In the process?' Anushka said in her statement.
'It's 2020 and things still don't change for me. When will I stop getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to pass sweeping statements?
